How I Overcame Distractions from My Mobile Phone and Increased Productivity

Ding!

What’s your reaction when you hear the ever-familiar notification sound? Do you pick your phone up with excitement to check what’s the latest? Or do you keep your peace and switch the notifications off for the better?

For many today, going digital is a must. Setting up your own social media channel is even a marketing must-have if you want to reach more audiences and establish your niche. No wonder entrepreneurs have their mobile phones as an extension of their hands.

However, along with this savvy tool is the risk of getting distracted and losing productivity. Were there times when you sat down to write your goals for the week and then your social media notification sounded off? The next thing you knew, you’d been scrolling on your feed for almost an hour already.

If this scenario sounds familiar, don’t worry. It happens to the best of us. But here’s the good news: we have the power to use mobile phones to our advantage and not let them take advantage of us.

It’s possible to stay productive and focused, even with a phone by your side. The key is to push distractions away. Here’s how.

3 Practical Tips to Push Away Mobile Phone Distractions

1. Turn off phone notifications on all social media apps.

It’s as simple as it sounds—just switch those notifications off and get on with your project. Easier said than done, right? What if someone tagged you in an important post and you missed it?

Consider a mindset shift. Not every mention or tag on social media warrants immediate attention. You can catch up on these updates after you’ve completed your tasks.

Even if it feels challenging at first, turning off social media notifications can significantly boost your productivity by reducing the urge to constantly check for updates.

2. Remove all distracting apps from the home screen.

Out of sight, out of mind. Take a look at your mobile phone’s home screen. What apps are displayed there?

The home screen should be reserved for essential apps that help you complete projects, or connect with clients in emergencies. The fewer distractions on your home screen, the more focused you can be on what you need to accomplish.

3. Use "focus modes" on your phone.

Google introduced Focus Mode in 2019 as part of its “Digital Wellbeing” tools. It allows users to turn off notifications from selected apps. When Focus Mode is active, it temporarily pauses the apps and stops notifications.

How does Focus Mode help?

  • It reminds you that the app is paused when you try to open it.

  • It allows you to schedule pauses, so notifications are blocked during work hours.

  • You can set Focus Mode manually or automatically based on your needs.

Focus Mode is a great way to stay on task without completely disconnecting from social media.

Social Media and Productivity: Key Takeaways

In today’s digital age, being adept with various digital applications is crucial. These often include social media platforms because that's where the audience is. Social media itself isn’t inherently distracting unless you let it be. At the end of the day, these apps are tools that can either work for or against you. Choose to make social media apps enhance your productivity.

How do you balance staying connected on social media with maintaining your productivity, and what strategies have you found most effective?
